FLAP SURGERY FOR GUMS

What Is Gum Surgery With Flaps?

Gum disease known as periodontitis, which is severe, is treated with gum flap surgery. Irreversible harm is inflicted upon the gums and adjacent tissues by periodontitis.

Why Is It Carried Out?

When periodontitis cannot be effectively treated by scaling and root planing, curettage, or antibiotics, flap surgery is used.

PERIODONTITIS SYMPTOMS:

  • Inflamed, bleeding gums.
  • Teeth gaps;
  • Halitosis, or bad breath.
  • If there’s a shift in how a denture or bridge (if any) fits.

Gum disease can be diagnosed if there is a separation between the gums and tooth surfaces (pockets) that is greater than three millimeters.

  • Press against the gum line.
  • Movement of teeth
  • Roots that are visible

How is it carried out?

The flap surgery is performed by a periodontist.

  • A periodontist puts anesthetic in the vicinity of the surgical site.
  • The periodontist cleans your teeth’s roots, fixes any damaged bone, and reflects the portion of your gums in the afflicted location.

Reshaping and smoothing the bone may be necessary to stop more plaque formation.

  • To encourage bone growth, the damaged bone may be repaired (grafted) using artificial materials or bone from another area of the body.
  • To halt the bleeding, the gum flap will be stitched back into position and wrapped with gauze.
  • A periodontal dressing may be applied at the surgical site if necessary, and it is taken off a week after flap surgery.

Following flap surgery, what’s to be done?

  • You may have bleeding for the first 24 hours following flap surgery. If bleeding starts, gently apply pressure.
  • Adhere to the prescription drug regimen.
  • Give up smoking.
  • Eat soft, chilled foods and stay away from hot beverages for two to three days.
  • If you are drinking cold beverages, avoid using straws.
